Jimi Hendrix (1942 - 1970)
Jimi Hendrix, born James Marshall Hendrix in Seattle, WA in 1942, is recognized as one of the most creative and influential musicians of the 20th century. Jimi, who was entirely self-taught, pioneered the explosive possibilities of the electric guitar. His innovative style of combining feedback and controlled distortion created a new musical form. Because Jimi was unable to read or write music, it's particularly remarkable that Hendrix’s meteoric rise in the music business took place in only four short years. Jimi Hendrix was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Hendrix as the greatest guitarist of all time.
Hendrix died from an apparent overdose at the age of 27. Jimi's musical genius continues to influence a host of modern musicians, from Jonny Lang to Miles Davis, and will be remembered for years to come.
