Aretha Franklin (1942 - 2018)

Musician

An American singer-songwriter, civil rights activist, actress, and pianist, Aretha Franklin became known as “The Queen of Soul” by the end of the 1960s. With hit songs such as “Respect”, “I Say A Little Prayer” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman”, Franklin is the most charted female artist in music history. Franklin won 18 Grammy Awards, including the first eight awards ever given for “Best Female R&B Vocal Performance”, and a Grammy Legend Award in 1991.

Franklin’s songs became anthems for movements of social change. As a supporter of Civil, Women’s, and Native American rights throughout her life, she used her platform and her voice to advocate for equality. Speaking of her song “Respect”, she reflected that “it was one of the battle cries of the civil rights movement. The song took on monumental significance.”
